How to make a mixtape someone will actually keep

A playlist is a list of songs. A mixtape is a message. Here's how to make one that lands, whether you burn it, tape it or let us mail it.

1. Make it for one person

The best mixtapes have an audience of one. Before you pick a single song, decide who it's for and what you want them to feel when it ends. Grateful? Missed? Ready for something new? Every choice after this gets easier.

2. Collect more songs than you need

Start with 25 or 30 candidates: songs you've shared, songs that remind you of them, and a few they've never heard. Then cut. Aim for 10 to 15 songs, about 45 minutes, which is one side of a classic C90 tape. Shorter beats longer.

3. Nail the opener

The first song sets the deal. Pick something that grabs attention in the first ten seconds and tells them what kind of tape this is. Save the slow, deep cut for later.

4. Sequence it like a story

Order is what turns a pile of songs into a mixtape. A few rules that work:

5. End on purpose

The closer is what they remember. It can be the quiet one, the hopeful one, or the inside joke. Make it feel like the last line of a letter.

6. Write the note

A short note turns songs into a gift. Say why you made it, point to one track and say why it's there, and keep it under 100 words. Specific beats poetic: “track 6 was playing when we got lost in Memphis” is better than any lyric.

7. Make it something they can hold

A link gets lost in a group chat. A cassette sits on a shelf for years. With Mixtapes by Mail you build the mixtape online, and we mail a real cassette with a tap-to-play tag on the tape and a printed J-card with your tracklist. They tap it with their phone and your mixtape opens as a playlist in Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube Music, in your order. You can also share the free online version as a link or QR code.

Questions

How many songs should a mixtape have?

Ten to fifteen songs, about 45 minutes. That's one side of a classic C90 cassette, and it's long enough to tell a story without losing anyone.

Can you still make a mixtape without a tape deck?

Yes. Make it online and we mail a real cassette with a tap-to-play tag. The songs open as a playlist in Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube Music, so nobody needs a tape player.

What's the difference between a mixtape and a playlist?

A playlist is a list. A mixtape is a gift: it's made for one person, in a deliberate order, with a note, and it arrives as something you can hold.
